Wood in a damp and poorly ventilated area is an ideal environment for mold, wood-destroying mushrooms, and rot. Standard organic antiseptics work but wash out and burn out over time. The mineral alternative is liquid glass as an antiseptic, that is, treating the wood with an aqueous solution of sodium silicate. "Liquid sodium glass ETIZ" is a silicate concentrate that fills the pores of wood and forms an alkaline mineral environment that is uncomfortable for microorganisms.

Why sodium silicate protects wood

The mechanism of biological protection of liquid glass differs from the usual impregnations. Several factors work at once:

  • Alkaline medium. Sodium silicate solution has a high pH, and mold, fungus and putrefactive bacteria do not develop well in alkalis — they prefer a neutral or slightly acidic environment.
  • Filling of pores. Penetrating into the structure of the tree, the composition closes the capillaries and cuts off capillary moisture — without moisture, biofouling simply does not start.
  • Mineral film. A thin non-combustible silicate layer is formed on the surface, which further reduces water absorption and increases the fire resistance of wood.
  • Dedusting and hardening. The surface layer becomes denser, which is useful for rough structures.

It is important to understand the honest limitation: in its pure form, the silicate film is brittle, and the composition itself does not "preserve" the tree as deeply as specialized industrial biocides under pressure. Therefore, it is reasonable to use liquid glass where there is a need for affordable preventive biosecurity plus moisture and fire protection, and not as the only measure for load-bearing elements on the street.

Where a liquid glass antiseptic is appropriate

Sodium silicate manifests itself best in closed wet areas and on rough structures, where the aesthetics are secondary, and protection against moisture and fungus is critical:

  • wooden elements cellars and cellars — racks, crates, rough walls;
  • logs and draft floor above the ground or concrete screed;
  • lower rims, embedded boards, wooden elements in contact with the foundation concrete;
  • crate and truss system in unheated areas (as an addition to fire protection);
  • wooden formwork and temporary structures that need resistance to dampness.

It is not recommended to use liquid glass for varnish or paint without a sample: a silicate layer reduces the adhesion of many finishing coatings. For visible furniture and finishing, it is better to choose compositions that are compatible with subsequent painting, or apply silicate only on hidden surfaces.

How to treat a tree with liquid glass: method and proportions

Proportions are given estimated — check according to the instructions of ETIZ and for a specific task. General operating procedure:

  1. Prepare the tooth surface. Wood should be dry and clean: remove dust, dirt, old peeling paint, clean pockets of visible rot.
  2. Prepare the solution. For antiseptic impregnation, the concentrate is usually diluted with water — approximately 1:2–1:3 by volume (a more liquid solution penetrates deeper). Take the exact concentration from the instructions for your task.
  3. Apply in 2 coats. Brush, roller or sprayer, along the fibers. The first layer is primer, diluted; after drying, apply the second one. Work quickly and in small areas — the liquid glass sets rapidly.
  4. Дайте высохнуть. Between the layers and before putting the structure into operation, withstand the drying time.

Protective equipment is mandatory: alkaline solution irritates the skin and eyes, so wear gloves and glasses, ventilate the room. Wash the tool with water immediately — after drying, the silicate is hard to remove.

Combination of antiseptic with waterproofing

The main cause of wood rotting is moisture. Therefore, it is logical to combine antiseptic treatment with waterproofing of adjacent surfaces. For example, wooden logs are laid on a concrete base, pre-treated liquid glass ETHYZ as a membrane waterproofing, and the lags themselves are impregnated with silicate from the fungus. Such a "double contour" — mineral waterproofing of concrete plus silicate biosecurity of wood — significantly extends the service life of the unit in a damp basement or cellar.

The same composition can also solve related problems: dedust and harden the concrete floor, increase the water resistance of the cement mortar, and additionally protect the wood next to the fireplace or furnace with silicate fire-retardant impregnation.

Advantages and limitations of silicate antiseptic

  • Advantages: incombustibility, moisture protection and bioprotection in one mineral composition; environmental friendliness (without organic solvents); surface hardening; economy due to dilution with water.
  • Restrictions: brittle film in its pure form; poor compatibility with subsequent painting without sample; fast setting requires a pace of work; does not replace deep industrial impregnation for critical exterior structures.

You can choose the volume for the task and clarify the characteristics in catalogue of liquid glass ETHYZ — 5 L (7 kg) and 10 L (14 kg) canisters are available.

FAQs

Does liquid glass really protect the tree from mold and fungus?

Yes, due to the alkaline medium of sodium silicate and the filling of wood pores. The high pH of the solution inhibits the development of mold, wood-destroying fungi and putrefactive bacteria, and closed capillaries cut off moisture, without which biofouling does not start. This is an effective preventive biosecurity for rough and hidden structures in wet areas, although for responsible external loaded elements it should be supplemented with specialized means.

How to dilute liquid glass for wood processing?

Approximately, the concentrate is diluted with water approximately 1:2–1:3 by volume: a more liquid solution penetrates deeper into the wood. It is usually applied in two layers along the fibers — primer diluted and the second after drying. Take the exact concentration for your task from the ETIZ instruction, since the mode depends on the wood species, humidity and purpose of the structure. There are no rigid universal recipes for mineral impregnations.

Is it possible to paint wood on top of liquid glass?

Caution: The silicate layer reduces the adhesion of many varnishes and paints, so you should not apply the finish coating without a preliminary test. Liquid glass is more reasonable to use on hidden and rough surfaces — lags, crates, basement elements — where the aesthetics are secondary. If finishing is required, select compatible formulations or limit silicate treatment to invisible parts of the structure.

Which ETHYZ liquid glass is suitable for wood — sodium or potassium?

ETIZ produces sodium liquid glass — a universal aqueous solution of sodium silicate for construction, waterproofing and biosecurity, including wood. Potassium glass is another product that is more often used in paints and flame retardants, and ETIZ does not position it in this line. For antiseptic treatment of wood against mold and decay, use sodium liquid glass ETIZ.

Do you need protective equipment when working with liquid glass?

Yes. The sodium silicate solution has an alkaline reaction and irritates the skin and eyes, so wear gloves and safety glasses, ventilate the room. Rinse the tool and splashes with water immediately — after drying, the silicate is hard to remove. Work quickly and in small areas: the liquid glass sets rapidly, and it will not be possible to apply it evenly over a large area in one pass.
