How to measure a greenhouse correctly

To measure a greenhouse correctly for installation or repair, use a tape measure to take the length, the width, the frame height and the arc length (if the greenhouse is arched). Also measure the spacing between the arches, if there are any, so you can work out exactly how much material — polycarbonate or film — you need.

Step-by-step guide to measuring a greenhouse

1. Get your tools ready: You will need a tape measure and a marker.
2. Measure the length: Find the longest part of the structure around the perimeter.
3. Measure the width: Measure the greenhouse from one side wall to the other.
4. Measure the height: Measure the frame from the ground to its highest point.
5. Measure the arc length (for arched greenhouses): — Measure along the outside of the arc, including both bases. You will need this figure to cut the polycarbonate accurately.
6. Measure the spacing between arches (for arched greenhouses): — Measure from one arch to the next; this matters for cutting and fixing the covering correctly.
7. Make a sketch: Draw the greenhouse and mark all your measurements on it. That makes the dimensions easier to picture and helps you plan the material.
